Tips To Organising An Older Child’s Birthday Party

One of the most difficult aspects of parenting is trying to make sure you organise things for your child that they will enjoy. This is always more difficult when they are going through that awkward stage of being trapped between being a child and a teenager. We all know children can be very temperamental at this age. One minute they could be all about Superheroes and the next minute they’re too mature to like them. This of course can be slightly frustrating when you are trying to come up with an idea for a birthday party. The last thing you want is to get something to ‘babyish’ for them, but you also want something that they’re old enough to enjoy, and this often causes a bit of a predicament.

What Can I Do About This?

Children at this age need something that will engage them. Older children don’t like the idea of having a party that younger children will enjoy as well. For example, we offer a Wizard’s Workshop package where we teach children how to perform magic tricks. We perform a Dynamo Style magic show which is tailored perfectly to children in the 8-11 age group. At this age, they don’t just want to watch magic tricks, they want to be able to do something that younger children wouldn’t be able to do and impress their parents and peers by learning and executing the tricks themselves.

Have That Perfect Balance!

A request that we get off a lot of parents with older children is just to have a disco. However we often feel that at this ‘awkward’ age between being a child and a teenager they aren’t old enough to solely enjoy a disco. You need the perfect balance between a disco and party games. A lot of party games are targeted at younger children so it is essential that you pick games that are suitable for their age range. A party game that we find is perfect for older children is musical dares.

In this game, the children begin by all dancing to modern and popular music and then have to race to sit down, and the slowest has to complete a dare. This game works wonderfully because you can tailor the dares to the age group of the children at the party, this usually goes down a storm. It is such a difficult task but if you can find the perfect ratio of the party games and the disco your child will have a smashing birthday!

A Talent Show!

Another fantastic suggestion that we have for an older child’s birthday party is a talent show. Talent show’s have all the fundamentals of a perfect party for children in this age range. A talent show offers all the children the opportunity to showcase their talents and as each performance is so individualistic it means it can be enjoyable for all the children involved. A talent show also means the children can watch a plethora of different performances, and this will of course be a big boost in keeping them engaged throughout the whole party. If you have a shy child who doesn’t like performing, you can get them involved by making them the judge(s) of the talent show.
